The Clothesline Project
In the spring of 2003, the Griffin Sexual Assault Center (with a little help from friends and partners) created an exhibit of the Clothesline Project. The Clothesline Project is a nationwide initiative replicated by rape crisis centers and women's organizations everywhere. Victims of crimes against women and their friends and families decorated t-shirts to express their thoughts and feelings about what happened in their lives. Using shirts donated by Griffin Technical College, we offered students a chance to decorate a shirt. Many women made moving statements about rape and domestic violence in their own lives. One woman made a shirt in memory of a sister who had been killed by her abuser. A man and a woman made a shirt together. The shirts have been "on the road" since, with displays at Griffin Tech, an adult education conference in Marietta, and the Spalding County Department of Family and Children's Services. If you would like to host a shirt-making event or display of our completed shirts, call 770-229-3116, ext. 22.
